Inspiration behind Apartments for Life visits Australia
Faced with the challenge of an ageing pppulation in The Netherlands, Humanitas developed a concept of “ageproof”apartments that mean older people never have to go to a nursing home, even if they eventually need a very high level care. It’s based on the fundamental belief that people should be the boss of their own lives.

Dutch aged care model to benefit Australians
The potential problems of aging and accommodation that worry Joan Poole are of paramount concern to thousands of elderly Australians, particularly when they reach the stage of needing nursing home accommodation.
Richard Spencer runs the Benevolent Society, Australia's oldest non-denominational charity.
For several years, he and his colleagues have been trying to come up with a new concept in lifestyle and accommodation for older Australians, regardless of their needs or income levels.

Dutch aged care model to benefit Australians
In the next thirty years the number of Australians aged 65 and over is set to increase by more
than double and by mid-century it is expected that a quarter of all Australians will be over 65.
The strain this will put on the aged care sector has many in the industry looking towards a
successful Dutch model for aged care which lists happiness as its main aim.

'Apartments for Life' Innovative Dutch Model Lets 95 per cent of Older People Stay in Their Own Homes
Minister for Ageing, Mrs Justine Elliot today met with Humanitas Foundation, an innovative Dutch housing model which allows 95 per cent of older people to live in their own homes until the end of their lives. This is known as "ageing in place."
